Brian Igoe, formerly the New England Boston Marathon Champion who has made athletics the focus of his life, was stricken with ALZ several years ago. Since he has been a close friend, I have continued for several years to remain in constant contact with him. We used to take long walks with my dog multiple times a week. Unfortunately, those walks are a thing of the past. The devastating decline in his physical well being has accelerated. He has been moved to the memory unit of his assisted living facility and is receiving hospice care. I used to think that ALZ was merely a form of dementia until I saw the physical toll it was taking. I am now even more aghast to see how much more the disease has progressed. Knowing that Brian was an adventurous bicyclist, swimmer and runner with athletics constituting the core of his being makes it all the more devastating to see what this disease has wrought.
