In 2021, my mother was brought home by the police because she walked out of her home of 47 years and couldn't find her way back. Over the next year, she would get upset and panicked begging to be taken home. In April of 2022, we moved her to a memory care home nearby. She still gets upset and anxious, and no longer remembers most of her children. But she is so happy to see us as friendly strangers.
In 2023, my father spent 10 days in the hospital after not taking his medication for over a month, and after suddenly losing a quarter of his body weight, because he couldn't remember how to cook. Today, I'm living in my father's home and doing my best to keep him safe, healthy and happy here as long as possible, but I'm afraid the writing is on the wall. He won't be able to stay in his own home much longer.
Why should you help the Ride to End ALZ®?
- No one should have to suffer the confusion and indignity of losing their reasoning, their memories, their histories like my parents have
- As we learn more about how this disease progresses, we continue to have breakthroughs to extend the mentally robust lives of people suffering from this disease and potentially someday to prevent it
- The only thing blocking progress is funding, so please help!
Today, the most effective interventions for preventing Alzheimer's-related dementia are:
- Improve cardiovascular health with daily
- Treat hearing and vision loss
- Mantenerse mental y socialmente activo
So participating in this ride motivates me to maximize my health, and it keeps me engaged with the social activity of working to prevent and eliminate this terrible disease, and keeps me mentally active planning to accomplish this goal and manipulating my friends and family into helping too :)
