It has been 12 years since we heard those words “You have dementia of the Alzheimer’s variety.” We were devastated by the news but we also reached out for support from the Alzheimer’s Association. They had support groups for me, as the care giver, but nothing for Tony. When he gave a talk at the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, he said “If there’s anyone out there walking the same path I am, come and talk to me, I think we can help each other.” Out of that statement came an Early Stage Support Group which, thanks to Becky Robinson and the Alzheimer’s Association, is still in existence today.

El Alzheimer's Association continues to be focused on supporting people effected by Alzheimer's and the search for a cure. They need our help and Team Duffy's Duffers is once again activated and reaching out to you for support in the search for a cure and for support for those for whom the cure will be to late. 

In March of 2017 I tested positive for the Beta Amyloid  and was able to join a clinical trial for "Asymptomatic Alzheimer's." This is where the focus is for the future cure, catching it before it's plaques and tangles have an opportunity to do its damage. Now, 2024, there is an approved drug that can help the patient with amyloid on their brain and early signs of dementia available. Because of research that has gone before there are medications that can slow the progression of Alzheimer's Disease today. For my husband, Tony, these were effective for a long time, giving us many more days of enjoying life together one day at a time. Now Alzhimer's research may help me live without suffering the torments that I've watched my husband go through. 

Alzheimer's Association doesn't just do "walks and fund raisers" for research. They are a major support system for people with Alzheimer's and their care-giving loved ones. I can't imagine doing this journey without their love and support. Thank you Alzheimer's Association.
