Hello fb friends!! Most of you have probably already heard of our story and the reason my cousins and I walk every year to raise money for Alzheimer Research! If you have, bear with me a few .
My mom's symptoms of Alzheimer’s came quickly in 1998, after I told her my dad had passed away while she was with me for a weekend visit. We took her home and she was not interested in making funeral plans and didn't think she needed to attend for someone she didn't know. After the funeral, she was taken to the doctor to determine what had happened to her (we thought maybe it was a stroke) and they quickly confirmed the dreaded disease.
Although she lived another 10 years, she couldn't swallow, couldn't speak and no longer remembered any of us. There is nothing worse than your mom not knowing you anymore! She passed in 2008 after her 5th stroke, which the doctors had predicted.
This is why we walk! Mom was one of her 5 siblings with alzheimer. Two of her other siblings were also diagnosed with it. But research has come so far in the last couple of years. Two years ago, they found a drug which will not cure it but will keep them coherent in our world for an extra 4 to 7 months. That may not seem long to most, but it's everything to someone who has a family member who no longer knows them.
Last year, the FDA approved another drug. Hopefully, we will see similar results. They now have a test which can tell you if you are prone to this disease. Would you want to know? Maybe you would stop putting off things which you feel can wait for another day. The researchers still need our help! On 28 September, I will be joining my cousins to walk again in Youngstown, 0hio. We are Patrick and Bridget's Steppers (our grandparents on my moms side). If you can be there, we would love you to walk with us! If you can't, please donate to our team!
I have a steep goal of $500 this year, but I know I can do it! Wouldn't it be great if this was the last year this walk was necessary? Wouldn't you be so proud to know you contributed to finding the cure? Any little bit helps!! Thanks for reading!
