I'm walking to honor Arlene Rousselle and Francis Dunton, Jr. Both were grandparents of mine that I've lost to Alzheimer's. Both were funny, kind, and intelligent - but most of all caring. My grandmother, Arlene, was always around to help my parents care for me as I grew up. Sometimes this was making crepes for me before taking me to school, playing board games together, or taking me somewhere I could ride my bike when I was little. I'll always fondly remember how once I became older, we could just sit and talk for hours at a time her life experiences, growing up working in the mills, and how she met my Pepere, Roger. Those conversations lessened as her Alzheimer's advanced, but it can't dim the memories I have our her.
My grandpa, Francis, was someone who served proudly in the U.S. Navy for twenty years, serving as an aircraft maintenance technician as an AZ-1, until his retirement in 1972. He attained the rank of E-6. His service to our country included tours of duty in Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia (twice) and Hawaii. He was a Korean War veteran. His assigned task force provided the blockade for “The Bay of Pigs” offensive, also known as the “Cuban Missile Crisis.” But he was more than that to me. I grew up listening to his stories about traveling with the Navy and his second act in life, exploring the country with my grandmother, Claire. He inspired me to see more of the world, for which I am forever grateful.
